Strengths and weaknesses

This year, I have learned a lot about my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Sometimes writing can either be very fun or very challenging for me. One of my strengths and being able to cite and quote properly. It took me a while to catch on, but now I know enough to help someone else. I'm still working on good traits but I have gotten better, Lastly I've mastered being able to expand my vocabulary and grammar in my writing. I've learned where to put certain words and where to start to check for grammar issues.    One of my main weaknesses would have to be understanding rhetoric situation. Sometimes I forget that if I am assigned to certain audience, that my word choice should reflect upon that. Another weakness I have  is forgetting to read over my work. Sometimes I type so fast that I slip up. My biggest issue that I have grown from but still have trouble with is writing how you talk. Especially with formal papers. I tend to slip up with that too.

Hits and misses

This year has been quite a rollercoaster for me when it comes to English. There were some pieces of writing that I really enjoyed and there were some pieces that I absolutely hated. Most of them I did not like though. First I want to talk about the pieces of writings I enjoyed. I enjoyed writing my research paper on Marie Antoinette. I always loved hearing about her "scandalous life". Even it especially fun to write about everything I learned about her. I felt successful with this piece because I actually enjoyed my topic. The topic grew on me more and more as the deadline drew closer.    I absolutely could not stand writing my personal narrative nor the literary analysis. I've learned fro this year that it is harder for me to become engaged in topics I am not interested in. With my personal narrative, I did not put my all into it. I felt like since I had told the story of my hose being flooded so many times that it was boring. I also did not like the book we ...

Purple Hibiscus ***SPOILER ALERT***

Purple Hibiscus is a very tough book to read sometimes. It's one of those books that tugs at your heart. The children and the mother go through so much abuse that you wish you could just call out to Jaja and Kambili and send them the help they deserve. When Papa poured boiling water on his children's feet, it made me upset that there are actual children in the world today who are stuck in homes where there is domestic abuse. Even though it is just a book, it sickens me that no one else in the book cares to turn Papa in for the physical and emotional damage he is causing for them. I'm aware that people abuse others and get away with it because of who they are and maybe that's why I get so upset reading this.      I especially feel terrible for Mama. She has lost her baby twice to Papa beating her and I can only imagine what women who are married to abusers feel. The first time he beat her with her bare hands and dragged her across the floor. The second time, he...

Prompts from List

#145    I feel as a girl, there is too much pressure to have perfect bodies. There are manny different reasons why girls feel their bodies are ineligible for love and appreciation. The world we live in throws us subtle hints at to how they think our bodies should look. For so long, Barbie dolls were only one shape. Skinny girls with tiny waists. There was such a lack of diversity that it caused me too look at dolls differently. If you ever follow Victoria Secret or social media models you soon notice they advertise the same size models or the same color models. The society we live in has transfigured the minds of young girls and women no matter the age to try to fit into what the world calls "beautiful". As a growing young woman, I cannot simply blame this all on guys who are attracted to solely these body types. I blame the women who tear down others for not looking the same as them.    Growing up, I never really enjoyed the way I looked. I had a huge gap in my ...

Police Brutality: Stephen Clark autopsy

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/30/us/stephon-clark-independent-autopsy.html       Frances Robles and Jose Del. A Real created an article on the New York Times page telling an audience some of the reasons of why Stephon Clark was shot eight times in his during a police raid. the two authors start off with stating the police's version of the story. The police stated they felt Clark had a firearm in his hand, which caused them to advance with eight shots that somehow landed in his back and torso. The family of Stephon Clark hired someone to do an independent autopsy which led to several questions from the community. Questions arose such as "How could Clark have been a threat if he was shot in the back? Wouldn't that mean that his back was turned in a prey stance instead of predatory stance? "The police department then came back with the response of Clark was turning around which led to the shots that landed in his back. This back and forth debate of who was wrong ...

Purple Hibiscus

As I've been reading the book Purple Hibiscus, I've noticed that one of the main characters, Papa, is very controlling. He does this by commanding his children to be the best in their class, abusing the mother, and he sublimely controlling the people around him. It becomes so unhealthy to some of the family that it shows in their actions. I'm not here to summarize the main character "Papa". I'm actually here to encourage others to think about how Papa's actions will affect others actions towards him?    Will the two children eventually rise together and fight back against their tyrant like father? Will the mother ever feel that she is worthy enough to pack up and leave? Will she ever be able to conceive another child? Or maybe possibly will Papa have a change of heart? Hopefully some of these questions will be answered as we continue throughout the book.

Song lyrics

I picked Umbrella by Jay Z and Rihanna because as a child the song was very catchy.  Umbrella by JAY Z and Rihanna http://www.metrolyrics.com/umbrella-lyrics-rihanna.html "Because when the sun shines, we'll shine together"  (Hyperbole- no one can shine as if they were the sun) "Told you I'll be here forever" (Hyperbole- forever is a long time. It is used to exaggerate the lyrics)  "When the world has dealt its cards" (metaphor- the world cannot actually deal cards) (personification) Hyperbole is used to exaggerate the song. Shining as if you were the sun and and being with someone "forever" is completely impossible. The writer wanted to show that even when times seem unrealistic they would be there.  Metaphor is something else used to exemplify something. The world dealing its cards is an example of life being difficult.  Personification is taking an inanimate object and making it do people like things. The world ...

Poem

Why must we tear down others? Why must be rude to those different than us? Why must we bend rules that are not meant to be broken? Why can't we appreciate those who do their best to please us daily Why can't society accept that we are all different? I myself am still learning. Maybe my experiences can teach others. Maybe I can learn from others. Maybe, just maybe. TECHNIQUES: ANAPHORA- repetition of same word ENJAMBMENT-  a run on line

Free Post

This weekend,  I had the craziest flu like symptoms of my life. I had never encountered the flu before, and I hope to never have it again. I never knew it could be that bad. I laid in the same spots for over 3 days. I didn't even get up to eat. The only time I got up were for hygiene issues and to open my blinds. I took so many different kinds of medicine that I can't even recall them all. I don't have all the same symptoms as before yet I'm still fatigue and get super cold from time to time.    Despite my illnesses, I caught up on a lot of sleep. I also caught up on a lot  of missed tv shows that I had previously recorded. It would have been better if I could've been able to eat but it was okay. I also watched a lot of makeup tutorials on the internet. For once, I actually sat down and studied for hours for Biology. Now I feel super prepared for my test tomorrow on protein synthesis.

Espresso Yourself// Launch Day

"Espresso Yourself" by Ngan was my absolute favorite presentation on Launch Day. To start off, I walked in the room to the warm smells of coffee beans. What next caught my attention, was the pretty lights along the walls that were flickering. Finally, the beanbags added the perfect touch to cafĂ© feel. I was so tired of sitting in boring, uncomfortable chairs that it was relieving to give my back a break. Ngan did a wonderful job of telling why coffee was so important to her. I related because growing up, my parents never gave me much coffee.     Another presentation that was pretty decent was the comparison of Martin Luther King to American cult and serial killers. At first when I heard this, I was very confused. How could this girl compare two different people with two completely different goals. When she finished, it somewhat made sense. She said they all persuaded people to follow them for their cause and persuade others to do the same. I wouldn't h...

Research Project

For my research question, I'm going to present on how Marie's Antoinette was full of undeserved hatred from the country of France and the peers surrounding her. She lived in a misogynistic time period where women had no voice. A time where women could be blamed for things there husband did. Marie was accused of being greedy, conniving, and only invested in herself. Her image was destroyed by the media for many years all because the country did not see fit to blaming her husband for the troubles of the country. It is important that I teach my peers about Marie Antoinette. For many years, I never truly knew who Marie Antoinette was. All I knew was that she was some woman that was beheaded. I thought she was an evil woman who deserved to be punished. Yet, as I took a further look into who she was, I realized she was a decent woman who was simply born at the wrong place at the wrong time.  Her "faults" were not truly faults. They were simply rumors and lies told about...

My best friend

Last year, I made a best friend. His name was Cole. Cole was the funniest, sweetest, weirdest, most adorable and aggravating person I had ever met. After about a week, we automatically had figured out that eighth grade wouldn't be so terrible if we stuck together. Cole and I went through ups, downs, and even in betweens. He was the greatest thing to ever happen to me.   One day, I got a phone call from Cole saying he was moving to Atlanta. I thought it was a joke at first but as months went on it became a reality to me that I only had so many weeks until my other half moved away. May 26, 2017 was the last day I saw my best friend. These last few months have been heartbreaking because I haven't had my best friend in so long. Thankfully though on January 26, 2018 I will be taking a trip to Atlanta to see my best friend. There we will exchange Christmas gifts and missed birthday gifts.
